Alternate Universe Oscars: 2021 Edition

Back in 2017, I decided to post what I called the "Alternate Universe Oscars." In it, I acted as the sole member of the Academy and picked some of the best films, performances, and screenplays of recent memory. Well, with the Academy Awards arriving again tonight, I decided to dust off this idea and give it another go.

Essentially, this list is a fantasy Academy Awards for me. I kept many of the "big" categories in tact (Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay are all there) but I've blended Original Screenplay and Adapted Screenplay for simplicity's sake. I've also modified the acting categories to Best Performance based on gender, regardless of screen time. I've assigned winners for each year since 2000, with a handful of "Honorable Mention" picks sprinkled throughout. My winner might occasionally overlap with the Academy's, but for the most part, my picks are very, very different. For the past decade or so, the Oscars have been sliding ever-further downhill under an avalanche of artistic irrelevance and bloated political grandstanding - consider this list a helpful alternative. Enjoy!
